Conquer one of Iceland’s most legendary trails, traversing 24 kilometres between glaciers, across volcanic terrain, and into the breathtaking Þórsmörk valley.
Some trails are walked. Fimmvörðuháls is conquered. This 24 kilometre odyssey threads between two glaciers, crosses volcanic terrain still warm from the earth’s breath, and delivers you into the mythic embrace of Þórsmörk valley.
Your journey begins at Midgard Base Camp in Hvolsvöllur, where seasoned local guides who know every contour of these highlands will prepare you for the day ahead. From Skógar waterfall, you ascend alongside the Skógá river, passing more than twenty cascades that tumble from moss-cloaked cliffs. The landscape transforms as you climb between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, walking ground forever changed by the 2010 eruption.
Here, the trail crosses lava fields that still hold warmth, weaving past the craters Magni and Móði, named for the sons of Thor. The descent into Þórsmörk reveals a valley of sculptural ridges and luminous green, a reward earned through every step of the 1,400 metre elevation gain.
Afterward, gather with fellow adventurers for a well deserved barbecue feast with beer or soda in hand. A super jeep carries you back to base camp, fording unbridged rivers as the highland light softens around you. This is Iceland at its most elemental, a challenge that becomes a cherished memory.
