Description

Trollaskagi (Troll Peninsula) is an spectaculra natural beauty where the beauty of the mountains and the fjords is awe inspiring. The area is rich with culture and for those knowledge thirsty history is on display at local folk museums and Cultural houses have exhibitions all year around. We drive from Akureyri capital of the north out the fjörd Eyjafjörður. The peninsula is cut by several deep valleys that were carved by glaciers during the glacial periods of the last Ice age and later by the rivers that now flow down those valleys. A few permanent glacier ice caps still exist in central Tröllaskagi but they are all rather small. Along the way we see some of the fishing villages where the people have survived by fishing for centuries. We drive through Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður and we also stop by some Black sand beach on the way to Siglufjörður that is a historic fishing town and also where the TV series 'Trapped' was filmed. On the way back we stop in Hauganes, village itself appears to have been formed in the late 19th century, first wooden house built in 1882, but centuries before that the area, the creek which forms a shelter from the ocean currents, was a harbour for the farmers in the area. The population is about 90 people and it’s been so for the past 50 years. Icelanders are famous for their use of hot geothermal water and in Hauganes you’ll find hot tubs on the black beach and a great opportunity for swimming in the Atlantic Ocean! At the end of the tour we stop at Baccalá bar restaurant in Hauganes before we drive back to Akureyri.
