Some mountains call to the crowds. Þríhyrningur whispers only to those who listen. Rising ten kilometres inland from Hvolsvöllur, this striking peak rewards the curious with an experience far removed from the well trodden tourist trails.

You will follow ancient sheep paths rather than groomed walkways, ascending through untouched highlands where the silence feels earned. On clear days, the summit unveils a panorama that steals breath: Þórsmörk’s glacial valleys, the rugged expanse of Fjallabak, and the shimmering South Coast stretching toward the horizon.

Yet this is more than a hike. It is a pilgrimage through saga country. Þríhyrningur and the nearby Flosadalur valley are sacred ground in Njáls Saga, where Flosi Þórðarson gathered his men before the infamous burning of Bergþórshvoll. Every ridge holds echoes of outlaws and heroes, of vengeance and fate written into the land itself.

The route covers five kilometres with 512 metres of elevation gain. Steep but achievable, wild yet welcoming. Your local mountain guide will lead the way, sharing stories that transform the landscape into living history.

This private tour includes pickup and drop off from Hotel Rangá or the Hvolsvöllur area, with alternative locations available on request. The entire experience spans approximately four hours, though the mountain sets its own pace. Suitable for adventurous spirits aged eight and above.
