Some mountains demand to be climbed. Þríhyrningur, rising sharply from the South Iceland lowlands, is one of them. This striking peak sits just 10 kilometres inland from Hvolsvöllur, yet it feels a world away from the well trodden paths. Here, ancient sheep trails replace groomed routes, and the silence of the highlands speaks louder than any crowd.

Your ascent follows 512 metres of elevation gain across 5 kilometres of untamed terrain. The reward? Sweeping panoramas over Þórsmörk, Fjallabak, and on clear days, the entire South Coast stretching toward the sea. This is wilderness walking at its most authentic.

But Þríhyrningur offers more than views. These slopes are steeped in saga lore. The mountain and neighbouring Flosadalur valley feature prominently in Njáls Saga, where Flosi Þórðarson gathered his men before the infamous burning of Bergþórshvoll. Walking here means treading the same ground as saga heroes and outlaws, where every ridge holds echoes of Iceland’s dramatic past.

Your local mountain guide will lead the way, sharing stories of the landscape while ensuring safe passage through this moderate terrain. The entire journey takes approximately 4 hours, depending on your pace. Transportation to and from the trailhead is included, along with hotel pickup in the Hvolsvöllur area. Other pickup locations available on request.

Minimum age is 8 for particularly adventurous young hikers.
