South Coast Explorer: Waterfalls, Glaciers and Black Sand

Journey along Iceland’s South Coast where thundering waterfalls, ancient glaciers and the legendary Black Sand Beach reveal nature at its most powerful and poetic.

1 / 1
Highlights
Walk behind the 60 metre Seljalandsfoss waterfall
Stand before the mighty cascade of Skógafoss
Witness Sólheimajökull glacier between two volcanoes
Explore Reynisfjara's basalt columns and black sands
Discover Vík, Iceland's southernmost village

Trace the elemental edge of Iceland where thundering waterfalls carve through ancient cliffs and glacial tongues reach toward volcanic black shores. This journey along the South Coast reveals the island at its most dramatic, a landscape shaped by fire and ice over millennia.

Your adventure begins at Seljalandsfoss, a 60 metre cascade where mist hangs in the air and the water runs pure enough to drink straight from the source. Continue to Skógafoss, equally magnificent in height yet broader in its power. Climb the steps beside the falls for sweeping views from above, or stand at its base and feel the raw force of the North Atlantic weather system made liquid.

At Sólheimajökull, witness a glacier suspended between two of Iceland’s most notorious volcanoes, Eyjafjallajökull and Katla. This accessible tongue of ice offers a window into the frozen heart of Mýrdalsjökull.

The journey continues to Reynisfjara, the legendary Black Sand Beach where geometric basalt columns rise like organ pipes and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks pierce the ocean horizon. Nearby, the island of Dyrhólaey completes one of nature’s most striking compositions.

Your expedition concludes in Vík í Mýrdal, a village of 750 souls perched at Iceland’s southernmost point, its beach counted among the ten most beautiful on Earth.
